Week of February 24 - 28, 2014

Week of February 24 - 28, 2014

I'm getting excited for PI day :)

6th Grade Math

Generally, we are starting "Covering and Surrounding".

Please return "Bits and Pieces" to your teacher and pick up a copy of "Covering and Surrounding".

Monday: pre-assessment

Tuesday: The pre-assessment showed you have a solid understanding of the definitions of area and perimeter. We will continue to work on the formulas for Area and Perimeter of common shapes, and learn about how BASE and PI tie into all of it.

In class, work on this in IXL: Area of parallelograms and trapezoids.
Then, work on this in IXL: Area of triangles and trapezoids.

Work at least 10 minutes on each of these sections above.
So, what is BASE?

For homework - Goin' old school - MEMORIZE THE FORMULAS BELOW:

Areas of Two Dimensional Figures
Triangle:  A three sided figure.

Rectangle:  A quadrilateral with four right angles.

Parallelogram:  A quadrilateral with two pairs of opposite sides parallel.
Area of a parallelgram formula

Trapezoid:  A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of opposite sides parallel.
Area of a trapezoid formula

Circle:  A set of points all equidistant from a given point - the center.
Area of a circle formula

Any Regular Polygon:  A figure with all sides and angles congruent.

Area of a regular polygon formula
Wednesday: Be prepared for some questions on the above formulae (as in a quiz) and a revisit of BASE, PI and CIRCLE.

Thursday: first thing, quiz on formulas of any regular polygon, circle, and trapezoid

Friday: Independent work. Planning for PI Day: read the History of Pi article. Underline what you DO understand, ignore what you don't. Think about how you will present your poster.

On Monday, I will ask you each
i) to recite PI to TWELVE digits (3.14159265259)
ii) what the PURPOSE of PI is and
iii) HOW PI is used in an important ratio regarding circle.

Algebra

Monday: review Chapter 6 'practice' test

Tuesday: Independent work. Please go back and do more practice on those types of questions we covered in class yesterday (from the beginning of Chapter 6). Do the questions IN YOUR TEXT that relate to that at which you most need to look.

After that, you can work in IXL, Algebra, any of these sections (all of these are live links):
Wednesday: direct teaching on first 1/2 of Chapter 6

Thursday: direct teaching on second 1/2 of Chapter 6, review of tests

Friday: independent work - Chapter 7 pre-assessment. We are going to have a PI-DAY party on March 14. Think about what you would like to do to celebrate it! And tell me on Monday.

Geometry

Monday: finish 10.7
Tuesday: independentChapter 10 review
Wednesday: in class - Chapter 10 review
Thursday: in class - Chapter 10 review
Friday: I have returned your Chapter 10 tests to Mr. Jay. Please review them and understand where things went wrong. On Monday please be prepared to explain the correct answers to me.

CAPstone

Monday:  AR - crunch eras
                  AM - decide on standards

Thursday:   AR - decide on standards
                         AM - decide on standards

For next Monday - AR have your new question ready. We will match high school standards where necessary for alignment.
