MONDAY(4/7 - in class) Bits & Pieces III - INVESTIGATION 3

TRIANGLE QUESTION:

GIVEN: We are given that the area of the triangle is the same as the area of the rectangle.
KNOWN: The area of the rectangle is 4.32 cm^2 (3.6cm x 1.2cm).
THEREFORE: The area of the triangle is 4.32 cm^2.

FORMUA: The formula for the area of a triangle is 1/2(bh).
GIVEN: The base of this triangle is 3.84
SOLVE: We need to solve for n.

We know that 4.32 cm^2 = 1/2 (3.84cm x n)

also can be written as 4.32 cm^2 = (3.84n)cm^2/2 (that is, everything divided by 2)
therefore, (4.32 cm^2)x2 = (3.84n)cm^2 (this gets rid of the 'divide by 2' on this side)
and 8.64 cm^2 = (3.84n)cm^2

next we can divide both sides by 3.84 cm to isolate n

8.64 cm^2 / 3.84cm = (3.84n)cm^2 / 3.84 cm
2.25 cm = n 

So n= 2.25 cm

Talk to me if the work from 8.2 is overwhelming. Normally, students would spend WEEKS in this, but we are accelerated.

THURSDAY(4/10 - in class) Section 8.5 - Exponential Functions

You have your resource packets. Work on those assigned questions for Monday. 

FRIDAY(4/11 - independent work) Section 8.6 - Exponential Functions

On the weekend, make sure you review Chapter 3, 4, & 5 for cumulative exam: go through the textbook. Reread the definitions, look at the Solved Examples at the beginning of each Section . Make note of any new CONTENT (as in, we didn't cover it or you forgot it) - content, not exercises. For example, if we didn't do a technology exercise, but it uses content you are familiar with, don't note this as being something to work on. Make sense? If not, write to me and I will get back to as soon as possible. I should be able to get back to you fairly quickly tomorrow. Go as far as you reasonably can. There is NO expectation that you will get through to the end of Chapter 5. Do not rush yourself. Do a thorough review, but don't dwell on things you know.


Monday we will continue with Exponential Functions and rational expressions with exponents.
