Week of May 12 - 16, 2014

TIDBITS:

We now have MAKE magazine online!

Oooh, I wonder what the experimental probability versus the theoretical probability would be?

6th grade math:

MONDAY(5/12 ) "DATA ABOUT US"

Mrs. Dawson is sick today.
Please stay in your classrooms and work there, doing the assignments posted here:

ASSIGNMENT:

This book is all about STATISTICS.
Your objective today is to become familiar with NEW vocabulary and to refresh your memories about mean, median, mode and range.

1.  Ask  your teacher for a copy of DATA ABOUT US.
2. Turn to page 68.
3. READ the definitions of the words we will be working with in this book.
4. Email me a list of those words you have never heard of before.

5. Reread MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE and RANGE.
6. Work in IXL on these questions:

HOMEWORK: (You can do it in math class if you have time, or during AF if you don't have band):

Page 8, Problem 1.1
Do parts A, B, C, D (do not do E, F)

***IF you can not get your homework done, write to me BEFORE you go to bed for an extension.***

TUESDAY: (5/13 - independent work) "DATA ABOUT US"

objective: learn new vocabulary, independent learning

Numerical and Categorical Data: learning how to represent data

A. Review your new VOCABULARY. Read the definitions of these words again:
1. Categorical Data
2. Numerical Data
3. Outlier

B. Practice

Today, you will work in IXL.
You can pick whichever sections you would like to do in 6th grade, Section R.

At 8.40, stop and email me. Write to me, telling me one thing you learned. And if you something is confusing, write about that too.

Have a great day!

WEDNESDAY(5/14 - in class) "DATA ABOUT US"

Collecting and displaying data about us

Objective:
- distinguish between Categorical Data and Numerical Data
 - define and give examples of Outliers

THURSDAY(5/15 - in class) "DATA ABOUT US"

Objective: Compare and contrast different types of data representations (Distributions); interpret stem-and-leaf plots

FRIDAY(5/16 - independent work) "DATA ABOUT US"

ObjectiveCompare and contrast different types of data representations (Distributions);
Make stem-and-leaf plots; make horizontal and vertical graphs

Working in IXL today:

Sixth grade > R.3 Stem-and-leaf plots
Seventh grade > O.4 Interpret stem-and-leaf plots

On these questions, you need to pull on the bar from the bottom up to adjust its height.

Sixth grade > R.8 Create bar graphs
Sixth grade > R.10 Create double bar graphs
Eighth grade > N.3 Create bar graphs
  1. R.18Choose the best type of graph

Algebra:

MONDAY: (5/12) CHAPTER 9: POLYNOMIALS -Factoring Special Products 9.7

Mrs. Dawson is sick today.
Please stay in your classrooms and work there, doing the assignments posted here.

OBJECTIVE: Learn a couple more patterns of factoring.

You have learned these patterns:

Square of a binomial
     (a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2
     (a-b)^2 =  a^2 -  2ab + b^2

Sum and difference pattern
     (a+b)(a-b) = a^2 - b^2

Factoring
     x^2 + Bx + C = (x + p)(x + q) where pq = B and p+q = C

Today, you will learn 2 more patterns

Difference of two squares pattern

     a^2 - b^2 = (a+b)(a-b)

Perfect square trinomial pattern

     a^2 + 2ab + b^2 = (a+b)^2
     a^2 -  2ab + b^2 = (a-b)^2

NOTE - it's the same PATTERN as for BINOMIALS, but we use it for TRINOMIALS too.

ASSIGNMENT:

Working together,
DO Examples 1, 2, & 3  on pages 600-1.
DO this Animated Algebra until you feel confident about recognizing the patterns.
PICK some exercises from the book (p. 603), do them and SHOW YOUR WORK.

When you feel ready, go ahead and do "C" level questions from your resource book packets.
Ideally, have 9.6 and 9.7 finished for Wednesday.

TUESDAY(5/13- independent work) CHAPTER 9: POLYNOMIALS

1. IXL WORK: Getting to know the 6 BASIC TYPES OF FUNCTIONS automatically:

2. POLYNOMIALS: Work on 9.6 and 9.7 from your resource book packets.

WEDNESDAY(5/14 - in classCHAPTER 9: POLYNOMIALS -

Debates today. We will review polynomials.

THURSDAY: (5/15 - in class) CHAPTER 9: POLYNOMIALS -

Debates today. We will review polynomials sections 9.2, 9.3 and 9.5.
Continue to work on your resource packets 9.6, and 9.7.

Begin work on 9.8: "C" level questions due on Monday, May 19.

FRIDAY(5/16 - independent work) CHAPTER 9: POLYNOMIALS -

You have the huge task of teaching yourself 9.8,  working on sections 9.6, 9.7 and 9.8 in your resource book and handing in your best work on Monday. At the same time - TEST. Already. Wow.

Your test is the Cumulative Review at the end of your Resource Packet,
     due Wednesday, May 19.

(Yes, it's unusual to have this due on a Wednesday. Usually take-home tests are due on Monday, but this is a long test. And you still have the resource book work to complete. Next week, we skip ahead to Chapter 13.)
