Week of April 28 - May 2, 2014

TIDBITS:

If you are in Algebra or Geometry, this will have special meaning to you :)

6th grade math:

MONDAY(4/28 - in class) Begin "HOW LIKELY IS IT?"

objective: learn (or demonstrate knowledge of) these terms "likely", "probable", "probability", "fair", "chance"

TUESDAY: (4/29 - independent work) "HOW LIKELY IS IT?"

If you have submitted your TEST to me (GH, DH):
You have the day off.

Everyone else: work on your TEST.
Email me with questions. I will check my email as often as I can this morning.

When you are done with your test: Consider the Monty Hall Problem.
And here.

WEDNESDAY(4/30 - in class"HOW LIKELY IS IT?"

Continuing with the concept of likelihood and fairness.

THURSDAY(5/1 - in class) "HOW LIKELY IS IT?"

Finishing Investigation 1. Discussion of likelihood, fairness, and expectation.

FRIDAY(5/2 - independent work) "HOW LIKELY IS IT?"

Today, you will explore the difference between  "theoretical probability" and "experimental probability".  This is what we did on Thursday when we looked at what the possible results could be of pulling a number from the bag, and then looked at what we actually drew.

Theoretical probability is the likeliness of an event happening based on all the possible outcomes.
Experimental probability is the ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of trials or times the activity is performed.

So, for our example, the theoretical probability was 4/8 of the number being odd or even, and the experimental probability probability was 5/8 even and 3/8 odd.

To practice these concepts, work on this section of IXL:     (Do them in this order. This should take you the full 60 minutes of math.)

(WARNING: It's going to be confusing at first, because we haven't covered how to write these probabilities. For the example we did today, it would be expressed as P(even) for the probability of something being even, and P(odd) for the probability of something being odd. P means probability.)

Algebra:

MONDAY: (4/28 - in class) CHAPTER 9: POLYNOMIALS

Chapter 9.1: Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

TUESDAY(4/29 - independent work) CHAPTER 9: POLYNOMIALS

Polish off your Take Home Tests.

Practice Chapter 9.1: Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

Watch this Khan Academy video (16 mins)

IFF (math for "if and only if") you are done and feel secure, you can watch these videos on multiplying polynomials, but you don't need to do any problems yet:

VIDEO 2 (There is no video 2. I note it here so it's less confusing when you see the Khan Academy label.)

WEDNESDAY(4/30 - in classCHAPTER 9: POLYNOMIALS

Submit your Take Home Tests for final review.

introduce Chapter 9.2: Multiplying and Dividing Polynomials

THURSDAY: (5/1 - in class) CHAPTER 9: POLYNOMIALS

Review Chapter 9.2: Multiplying and Dividing Polynomials.
Introduce Chapter 9.3: Special Polynomials

FRIDAY(5/2 - independent work) CHAPTER 9: POLYNOMIALS

Do the Quiz for Chapter 9, Sections 9.1 - 9.3 that your teacher has for you. Leave it with your teacher at after math class. I will review them over the weekend.

For extra practice, you can do this quiz:

ZF and EK - you guys had to leave before you were able to practice trinomials with us. In such cases think "Distributive. Distributive. Distributive." Here is some background information:

     WATCH THIS: More Multiplying Polynomials
     DO THIS:   Multiplying Polynomials
