FRIDAY: (5/2 - independent work) "HOW LIKELY IS IT?"
Today, you will explore the difference between "theoretical probability" and "experimental probability". This is what we did on Thursday when we looked at what the possible results could be of pulling a number from the bag, and then looked at what we actually drew.
Theoretical probability is the likeliness of an event happening based on all the possible outcomes.
Experimental probability is the ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of trials or times the activity is performed.
So, for our example, the theoretical probability was 4/8 of the number being odd or even, and the experimental probability probability was 5/8 even and 3/8 odd.
To practice these concepts, work on this section of IXL: (Do them in this order. This should take you the full 60 minutes of math.)
(WARNING: It's going to be confusing at first, because we haven't covered how to write these probabilities. For the example we did today, it would be expressed as P(even) for the probability of something being even, and P(odd) for the probability of something being odd. P means probability.)
