Week of November 3 - 7, 2014

It's no longer Fall. 
It's no longer the season of hexaflexagons, vivid leaves, and spooks.
It is Winter. 
As the outside world slows down, as Nature falls asleep, I hope the fire of your inner self continues to glow brightly. 



6th grade math:

11/3 MONDAY(in class work) SNOW DAY 
  • HAND IN: your "Bits and Pieces I" exit tickets.
  • PRACTICAL GOAL: We need to use the NWEA data and CCSS Mathematical Practices to write goals for Student Led Conferences.
  • LEARNING GOAL: 
  • Recognize linear and non-linear patterns in tables and graphs and describe those patterns using words and symbolic expressions.
        This is going to be VERY difficult to understand. He's speaking to robotics engineers at a university, but I think you can follow the general concepts. 

Think about: 

 - The very different goals of Hollywood mechanics (fun :) and engineering mechanics (boring :). 
 - How many famous mathematicians/scientists did Eitan mention? Who were they? 
 - How many different types of math did he mention? What were they?

We will discuss this tomorrow.


11/4 TUESDAY: (in class work)

      11/7 FRIDAY: (independent)
      • SCRATCH LAB. (Leave the computers with Mrs. Boone when you are done.) Follow this link and from there, decide to "try it out", "see examples" or "join". Have FUN!!!!!!

      Standards for next week:
      Math.CCSS.Math.Content.6.G.A.22. Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas V = l w h and V = b h to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
      Math.CCSS.Math.Content.6.G.A.44. Represent three-dimensional figures using NETS made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

      • Begin Chapter 3 - Linear Equations - in the Big Red Book. 
      Use the White Computers. 
      First go HERE
      Go to the upper left hand corner, the "Help with the Math" section. It's green.
      Click on @HomeTutor.
      Click on Chapter 3.
      Work through Sections 3.1, 3.2, 3.3.

      Then, go HERE
      Go to the section Practice, Practice, Practice in the middle of the top row. It's light blue. Click on eWorkbook. 
      Complete the exercises for Sections 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 as your preassessment. 
      Save / print your results for me.

      • Whatever you do not finish in class, you are to finish over the weekend and submit on Monday.
      REMEMBER: Your job is to ISOLATE THE X, just like this Dalek below wants to EXTERMINATE Dr. Who, say to yourself - "X-terminate, X-terminate" (terminate the X by isolating it).
